Wat willen tieners eigenlijk in hun vrije tijd? Hoe ervaren ze hun buurt? Begin 2004 werd bij meer dan 35000 tien- tot zestienjarigen gepeild naar hun behoeften aan vrijetijdsbesteding in de eigen buurt. De bevindingen werden voorgelegd aan een aantal koepel- en middenveldorganisaties om tot concrete beleidssuggesties te komen. De aangemaakte platformteksten werden in het najaar aan de bevoegde ministers voorgelegd op een discussiedag in het Vlaams Parlement. In het eerste hoofdstuk van dit boek wordt door Lieven De Rycke van het Kinderrechtencommissariaat nog even stilgestaan bij de belangrijkste resultaten van dit onderzoek. Leen Ackaert, eveneens van het Kinderrechtencommissariaat, vraagt zich in een tweede hoofdstuk af of spelen zo typisch is voor kinderen en wat het belang is van het buiten kunnen spelen. Via een tiener-participatieproject in Sint-Truiden illustreert ze hoe kinderen hieraan kunnen bijdragen. Marianne Labre gaat als speelruimteambtenaar in Gent na in hoeverre er bij De (her)inrichting van de publieke ruimte rekening wordt gehouden met de wensen van meisjes. Orthopedagoog Geert Van Hove maakt enkele bedenkingen bij de vrijetijdsbeleving van kinderen met een beperking. Eric Castermans, coordinator bij 'Uit de Marge', wijst er op dat ook maatschappelijk kwetsbare kinderen en jongeren een enorm potentieel bezitten aan talenten en mogelijkheden. Het jeugdwerk kan hen hierbij helpen. Als coordinator bij JES vzw probeert Gorik Kaesemans nog specifieker in te gaan op de vrijetijdsproblemen in de grootstedelijke agglomeraties. Journalist Filip Rogiers ten slotte, komt in een laatste hoofdstuk tot de ontdekking hoe moeilijk het is om jongeren te zien zoals ze zijn. Een schooljaar lang volgde hij voor 'De Morgen' het levenspad van zes jongeren. Op een hanteerbare cd-rom wordt het hele Kliksonsproces in kaart gebracht. De Kliksonsvragenlijst, de individuele standpunten van de koepel- en middenveldorganisaties, de platformteksten, de discussies en de reacties van De bevoegde ministers komen hierbij aan bod.
